IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Vera Nell
Ballew
December 19, 1933 – March 31, 2025
Vera Ballew passed away at her residence in Albertville, AL on 31 March, 2025. She was born 91 years earlier in Blount County, Alabama.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Ralph Ballew, her parents: Nettie and Mitchel Vaughn and her siblings: Bertha McCary, Jerry Vaughn, Charles Vaughn, and Edsel Vaughn. Survivors include her four children: Janice Brown, Jeff Ballew (Melody), Dale Ballew (Sandra), and Julia Ballew; ten grandchildren: Grant Brown, Austin Brown (Brandi), Wesley Ballew (Janae), Julie Ballew, Dustin Ballew (Julie), Sawyer Ballew (Yami), Lee Ballew (Susan), Michael Ballew, Cameron Ballew (Samantha), and Chesley McCarty; thirteen Great Grandchildren; sister-in-law Louise Hartline (Harold), and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Vera was valedictorian of her high school, graduating in 1951. At the age of 18, she married Ralph Ballew, the love of her life. She supported Ralph in his career while raising four children. After Ralph retired, they moved back to their roots in Sand Mountain to be with family.
Vera was an extraordinary woman, exhibiting strength, loyalty, and a will of iron. Her family was her greatest joy and nothing gave her more pleasure than spotting ways she could help. No need escaped her eagle eye and every family member was a recipient of her generosity. Duty and service to her family was the main priority of her life.
Born with a sharp mind and an even bigger heart, Vera had an innate wisdom that guided her family through life's ups and downs.
She was a fabulous cook and fed children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with vegetables from the enormous garden, either fresh or canned from the summer before. Her banana pudding was legendary, her cornbread unmatched, and every meal she served was a testament to her love.
Her memory was remarkable and as a result, she was an exceptional bridge player. She could also locate any item lost in the house. She played in numerous bridge clubs and regularly trounced her children and grandchildren in Alley, a family board game.
She, together with Ralph, were a shining example of the meaning of true partnership, love, and family. They were married for 72 years.
She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in every loving sacrifice and every lesson passed down.
Brother Ricky Harcrow will conduct a graveside service on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Gibbs Chapel Cemetery. Family and friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to your favorite charity.
