Mr. Phillip H. Tipton, Sr., age 82 of Snead, passed away Thursday, August 19, 2021 at Marshall Medical Center South.
Mr. Phillip H. Tipton, son of Dewey David Tipton and Birtie Tipton was born September 6, 1938 in Calera, Alabama. During his teenage years, he professed his faith in Jesus Christ when a leader of the church walked up to him while he was working in the fields. He attended High School and upon graduation, joined the Marines with his brother, Billy, and did a tour of the Mediterranean Sea and around the world. During his time of duty, he was stationed at Guantanamo Bay. He was honorably discharged and went on to marry his first wife, Linda Sue Little and had three children. He joined the Birmingham Police force where he served the public as a police officer and Sergeant Detective for 30 years before retiring.
Being a steadfast worker, he took a position with the Alabama State of Corrections and served there for 10 years and then as a detective for the State of Alabama, Department of Investigations. During his career in law enforcement, he also owned and managed a cattle farm in Blount County, Alabama for 47 years.
He continued to serve his community as a Deacon, the Security Chairman and a Sunday School Teacher at Bethel Baptist Church in Snead, Alabama. He started a music school at the church for children and adults. Mr. Tipton faithfully served Christ throughout his life and will be remembered for his many accomplishments and how he touched the lives of so many others.
After the passing of his first wife, he later married Peggy Brown with ceremonies held at Bethel Baptist Church. They lived a happy 5 years before his passing.
Mr. Tipton lived a life of courage, honor and dignity. He was an amazing father, grandfather, friend, brother, son, husband and community worker. He loved his country and lived his life as an American Patriot in the example of our founding fathers. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, his family is asking to send donations to Bethel Baptist Church in Snead, AL.
He is survived by his wife – Peggy Tipton; children – Terri Lynn Tipton, Phillip Harold Tipton, Jr, and Amy Tipton Owens (Marc); grandsons – Luke Owens and Jake Owens; step-children – Tonya Smith and Greg Brown (Michelle); a host of step-grandchildren and a host of step-great grandchildren; siblings –Wallace Tipton, Bobby Tipton (Shirley), Hubert Tipton (Sandra), and Michael Tipton (Sue), as well as a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mr. Tipton is preceded in death by his wife – Linda Little Tipton; parents – Dewey David and Birtie (Folsom) Tipton; siblings – Billy Tipton, Fred Tipton, David Tipton, Jr., Ralph Tipton, Buford Tipton, Lloyd Tipton, Katie Tipton Dunston, Barbara Tipton Lambert, Edna Tipton Peters, Kenneth Tipton, and Irene Underwood.
Brother Dustin Taylor and Brother Bric Latham will conduct the Funeral Service on Sunday, August 22, 2021 at 4:00 PM at Bethel Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery. Mr. Tipton will Lie-In-Repose, at Bethel Baptist Church, Sunday from 2:00 PM until Funeral Time.
Pallbearers will be – Luke Owens, Jake Owens, Walter Tipton, Vance Tipton, Scott Tipton, Chris Tipton, and Austin Pennington.
Honorary Pallbearers will be – The Deacons of Bethel Baptist Church – Floyd Hogeland, Roy Watkins, and Birl Gargus.
In lieu of flowers, his family is asking to send donations to Bethel Baptist Church in Snead, AL.
