Joyce Franklin Smith, a cherished mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, in Huntsville, Alabama. Born Peggy Joyce Thompson on March 25, 1940, in Alabama, her life was marked by an unwavering devotion to her loved ones and a deep-rooted loyalty that touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.
A proud lifelong member of Altoona Second Baptist Church, Joyce’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She found joy in family gatherings, where laughter and togetherness filled the air, and her love for those around her radiated with unmatched warmth and sincerity. She was known for loving fiercely and loyally, a trait that defined her relationships and left an indelible mark on her family and friends.
Professionally, Joyce retired from the Blue Bell factory, but it was in her home where she truly shined. Baking and cooking for her family and friends was one of her greatest pleasures—a heartfelt expression of her care and generosity. She also treasured her time spent at the beach, moments of peace and happiness that balanced a life so devoted to others.
Joyce’s proudest joy was her family. She is survived by her beloved sons: Jeff (Ramona) Franklin, Johnny (Lisa) Franklin, Jimmy Franklin, and Joe (Christa) Franklin. She also leaves behind her sister, Cherie Douglas, and brothers Louis (Betty) Thompson, Randy (Gloria) Thompson, and Gary (Billie Sue) Thompson, along with her sister-in-law Vera Thompson. Her legacy lives on through a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will carry forward her spirit and love.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, J.L. Franklin and Bill Smith; her beloved parents, Drexel and Evelyn Thompson; her sister Maxine Toney; and her brothers Lynn, Roy, and Bobby Thompson, who now rest peacefully alongside her.
The family will gather to honor Joyce's memory with a visitation at Snead Funeral Home, on June 11, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. This will be followed by a funeral service from 2:00 PM until 2:30 PM at the same location. Joyce will then be laid to rest with loved ones by her side at Altoona / Walnut Grove Cemetery, Walnut Grove Road, Altoona, AL 35952, beginning at 3:00 PM.
Joyce Franklin Smith’s life was a testament to loyalty, love, and family. Her kindness, her strength, and the joy she brought to those around her will forever linger in the hearts of all who knew her. Her memories will continue to inspire a legacy of dedication and love that never fades.
