John A. Jenkins, a cherished father, grandfather, and beloved member of his community, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, in Horton, Alabama, where his heart had always been. Born on October 2, 1930, in Madison County, Alabama, John was the youngest of twelve children in a humble family of sharecroppers. His early years were marked by hard work in the cotton fields and produce farming, laying the foundation for a life defined by perseverance, dedication, and love for family.

John’s journey led him to serve honorably for two years in the United States Army, a testament to his commitment and patriotism. Following his service, he embarked on entrepreneurial endeavors, building a legacy in business by selling produce and trucking freight to the West Coast. His industrious spirit did not stop there; alongside his family and close friends, he developed a thriving mining operation, adding yet another chapter to his remarkable life story.

For 47 years, John shared a deep and abiding love with his late wife, Jewel Jean Jenkins. Together, they nurtured their farm in Blount County, Alabama—a place where John found immense joy in raising cattle and living close to the land. His passion for repairing machinery and inventing creations fueled countless special moments spent alongside his children and grandchildren, who will forever remember him as the heart and mind behind many family projects and dreams realized.

John passed away surrounded by his loved ones on the very farm he loved so dearly. His legacy is carried on by his devoted daughter, June Downs, whose unwavering care and love for her parents have been a beacon of kindness and compassion.

He is also survived by cherished nephews and nieces, including Donald Merrell (Wanda), Doris Elkins (Wayne), Linda Sledge (Larry), J.W. Jenkins (Glenda), Randy Lyon, Gilda Lyon, Bruce Lyon, Tanjie Kling (Bill), and Ferrell Jenkins.
