Jeffrey Neal Painter, born on March 9, 1963, in the small town of Oneonta, Alabama, passed away on May 13, 2026, at UAB Hospital after his hard fought battle with esophageal cancer. His journey through life was marked by a deep love for family, an unmatched work ethic and a spirited personality that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Jeff grew up working on the family farm, where he learned the value of hard work, grit, and determination at an early age. He carried those qualities with him throughout his life and worked to put himself through college. He graduated from Jacksonville State University, where he served as President of the Delta Chi fraternity — an early reflection of the leadership, loyalty, and respect he inspired in others. Jeff was known for his sharp wit, sarcastic humor, and smart-aleck personality. Though he could seem serious at first, those who truly knew him knew his quick comebacks, humor, and ability to make people laugh.
Jeff’s interests reflected both his roots and the things he loved most. Farming was always close to his heart, and he found joy in gardening and staying connected to the lifestyle he was raised in. He was a devoted Alabama Crimson Tide football fan, cheering faithfully through every season. He was also known as the grill master of the family, always happiest cooking for the people he loved and bringing everyone together around good food. Beyond these joys, Jeff was an avid reader who was always eager to learn and explore new ideas.
At the heart of Jeff’s world was his family. A beloved father, brother, son, and papa, he truly embodied what it means to love without reservation. Sundays were sacred to him, spent at his parent’s home with family where laughter and stories filled the air. His affection extended beyond family to include Maggie, his cherished dog, whom he loved deeply. Jeff and his former wife and friend, Valerie Painter, shared the joy of caring for Maggie, a bond that spoke volumes about the enduring connections they maintained.
Jeff is survived by his devoted son, Ryan Denton Painter and daughter-in-law Grace; his loving daughter, Ashley Elaine Campbell, and her husband Austen; and adoring grandson, Ayden Kai Campbell. Awaiting arrival soon is a new granddaughter, Ria James Painter, who will carry Jeff's spirit forward into a bright future. He also leaves behind his parents Jerry Wayne and Betty Sue Painter and behind his sisters, Belinda Painter Woods (Shannon) and Gina Painter Harris (Danny), along with a wide circle of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, and his Delta Chi brothers who all remember him with great fondness and respect.
Jeffrey Neal Painter’s life was one defined by hard work, loyalty, humor, and love for his family. His legacy lives on in the countless memories, lessons, laughter, and traditions he leaves behind. Though his loss is deeply felt, his spirit will continue to live on through those who knew and loved him
