Snead

Gracie Maberene Byrum, a cherished member of the Snead community and a woman whose life blossomed with love, dedication, and grace, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026, in Snead, Alabama. Born on June 14, 1934, Gracie’s 91 years were marked by a passionate spirit and a heart deeply rooted in family, faith, and the simple joys of life.

Maberene’s love for flowers and gardening was more than a hobby; it was a reflection of her nurturing soul. She found joy in tending to her rose bushes, which stood as a vibrant symbol of her care and patience. As a talented seamstress, Maberene wove love into every stitch, much like the bonds she cultivated with those around her. Her wanderlust led her to travel with enthusiasm, exploring new places with the same wonder she held for the gardens at home.

A lifelong member of the former Snead United Methodist Church, Maberene's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was also an ardent fan of both the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Atlanta Braves, passions she shared with family and friends, creating cherished memories filled with excitement and camaraderie.

Maberene is survived by her beloved daughter, Beth Sutherland and her husband Gary; her daughter-in-law, Karen Byrum Shelton; and her grandchildren, Laurel Anderson and her husband Quaid, Nick Byrum and his wife Ashley, Olivia Potts and her husband Matthew, and Madilyn Byrum. She was a devoted great-grandmother to Dallas Anderson, Elijah Anderson, Noah Anderson, Emma Kate Anderson, Chandler Byrum, and Jameson Byrum, each of whom held a special place in her heart.

Her family will carry on her legacy of love and kindness, supported by the pallbearers who are honored to guide her on her final journey: Nick Byrum, Quaid Anderson, Matthew Potts, David Freeman, Ron Collins, and Larry Snead.

Maberene was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Byrum; her son, Philip Byrum; her father, Thurston Jackson; her mother, Lolus Wheeler Jackson; and her brother, Nollen Jackson. Their memories live on, intertwined with Maberene’s own, creating a lasting mosaic of family and history.

The community will come together to honor Maberene’s life with a visitation at Snead Funeral Home, on June 15, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and again on June 16, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. on June 16 at the same location, with burial at Ebenezer Cemetery in Altoona, Alabama, beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Gracie Maberene Byrum’s life was a testament to love’s enduring power—the love of a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and faithful congregant whose warmth and spirit will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Her garden grows on in the hearts of all who knew her, a beautiful tribute to a life well lived.
