Bumon Joe
Pruett
December 7, 1922 – February 6, 2021
Born December 7, 1922 in Snead, Alabama to his parents Venie Joe Pruett and Lillie Osborn Pruett. He was married to the love of his life, the departed Jewell Corene Thompson, for more 42 years. Bumon began his heavenly journey to join Jewel on February 6, 2021 from the Gadsden Regional Hospital after more than 98 years of his earthly passage. He was preceded in death by his wife Jewell, daughter Teresa Pruett McArthur, grandson Mark Pruett, and siblings James Dean Pruett, Euthema Pruett Kornegay, Eloise Pruett Jimmerson, and Orvel Pruett, He is survived by children and spouses: Stanley Pruett and wife Carolyn Roach Pruett, Charles (Charlie) Pruett and wife Kay Ballew Pruett, Rex Pruett and wife Lee Marshall Pruett, and son-in-law Eddie McArthur. Grandchildren and spouses are William (Mac) McArthur and Karla Harris McArthur, Julie McArthur Sizemore, Jill Pruett Woods and Josh Woods, John Pruett and Danica Pruett, Allan Pruett and Jennifer Riley Pruett, Terry Pruett Jennings and Frank Jennings. Great Grandchildren are Marcy Copeland, Savannah Sizemore, Casey Woods, Lola Woods, Amanda Pruett, Samuel Pruett, Andrew Pruett, Austin Pruett and Emma Pruett. Bumon has many nieces and nephews that he loved and cherished dearly.
Bumon attended and graduated from Snead Elementary, Snead Junior High, and Susan Moore High School from 1928 to 1940. After high school he completed the Auburn machinist trade school and went to work in the Shell Plant in Alabama City providing munitions for World War II support. After the war Bumon and Jewel became a Blount County farm family for 7 seven years. Then they moved to Walnut Grove, Alabama, which became their final earthly home and Bumon started Government Civil Service Work with the Anniston Ordnance Depot in 1952. In 1958 he transferred to the new National Aeronautics and Space Administration at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama while maintaining his family home near the Methodist Church in Walnut Grove, Alabama. During the following years all four of his children graduated from Walnut Grove High School and his three sons completed college degrees from Auburn University. Bumon worked as a mechanical technician on the NASA Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle projects during his 27 year career with the space administration. He receive two patents and numerous NASA awards during this time. In 1985 he retired from government service and worked for NASA and US Army Missile Command contractors in Huntsville for several years before fully retiring from aerospace work in 1990. Then he returned to cattle farming in Blount and Etowah counties with his sons for the final 30 years of his successful work life.
During the 70 plus years of family life in Walnut Grove he was an avid fan of Walnut Grove and Auburn athletics programs. He was a leader in Boy Scouts, PTA, and the Methodist and other Churches activities. Most of all he and Jewell had very active lives in the love and support of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Many of them recall being taught to drive by Bumon on the backroads in his ever-present Volkswagen Beetles.
Everyone will remember the always present smiles and warm greetings he conveyed to everyone. Those who knew him well describe him as loving, kind, caring, generous, and hard working. He was a "people person".

Reverend Jerry McCright and Reverend Brigit Dowdy will conduct the Funeral Service on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 1:00 PM at The Chapel of Snead Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Altoona / Walnut Grove Cemetery. Mr. Pruett will Lie-In-Repose, at Snead Funeral Home, Tuesday from 12:00 PM until Funeral Time.
Pallbearers will be his Grandsons and Great Grandsons – Mac McArthur, John Pruett, Allan Pruett, Austin Pruett, Samuel Pruett, and Andrew Pruett
In Lieu of Flowers donations may be to Walnut Grove United Methodist Church, PO Box 144, Walnut Grove, Alabama 35990; flowers are always welcome as well.
