Betty Gay Brown

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Betty Brown, who left this world on July 11, 2026, in Horton, Alabama. Born on December 18, 1937, Betty’s eighty-eight years were woven into the very fabric of the Horton community, where she lived her entire life, nurturing her family, friends, and neighbors through steadfast faith, gentle kindness, and a gift for storytelling that will echo in memory for generations.

Betty was the cherished daughter of Roy and Edna Shelton and the beloved sister of Roberta Moman and Donald Wayne Shelton, all of whom have gone before her, along with her devoted husband Reggie Brown. Now, after a life well-lived, Betty’s reunion with those loved ones brings peace to those she leaves behind, knowing she is surely surrounded by family, joy, and the glory of her faith.

As a proud graduate of Susan Moore High School, class of 1955, Betty’s leadership shone early—serving as Class President and cultivating deep friendships that would last a lifetime. Her professional life reflected her warmth, diligence, and steady hand; she served as a typist at Hayes Aircraft and secretary to several local businesses—Petrolane Gas, All Gas, Country Gas, the First Baptist Church in Albertville, and Snead Cable Company. In every workplace, Betty brought not just skill, but lightness, laughter, and a spirit of cooperation that endeared her to colleagues and clients alike.

But Betty’s greatest legacy is the love she poured into her family. She raised her children in Horton, instilling in them the values of faith, kindness, and connection. Surviving her are her beloved daughter, Dana Elliott (George); her son, Keith Brown (Glenda); and her granddaughter, Brittney Elliott, each of whom carry forward her tradition of storytelling, her unwavering faith in God, and her loving spirit. She is fondly remembered also by her sister-in-law, Myra Benefield, and a host of nieces and nephews who were touched by her quiet strength and boundless affection. She is also survived by her closest friends, Faye Westbrook and Sara Harris. 

Her ties to Horton ran deep, and she is remembered fondly by friends and neighbors alike. As a lifelong member of New Prospect Baptist Church, Betty’s faith was both a comfort and a cornerstone. She cherished her church home, where she forged bonds that sustained her through the years, and where she will be lovingly remembered as someone who could always be counted on, not just for help, but for a story, a smile, or a helping hand. Betty possessed remarkable talents—including sewing and needlework, her creations treasured as heirlooms and her delicate artistry admired by many in the community.

Known for her ability to recall and share the tales and people of Blount County, Betty made every gathering richer, bringing to life the past with humor and kindness. Her memory will live on in every stitch of her embroidery, every lesson of faith and strength she imparted, and every story passed down by those blessed enough to have known her.

Sherman Leeth, Zac Leeth, Stephen Shelton, Kenneth Edwards, Lee Netherton, and Josh Daniels have been asked to serve as pallbearers. 

Family and friends will gather to honor Betty’s life at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Betty will then be laid to rest at Zion Hill Cemetery, at 2:00 p.m. There, in the earth of the town she so loved, her memory will find its home.

Though Betty Brown will be profoundly missed, her spirit abides in every heart she touched. The love she shared now serves as her lasting legacy—a reminder to keep faith, treasure community, and find joy in each and every story.
